The business of selling merchandise to anyone
other than the final customer. Most
manufacturers or producers sell in bulk to a
wholesale organization which distributes the
smaller quantities required by retail
outlets. The wholesaling business grew
rapidly in the 19th century in line with
increasing mass production of goods, which
created the need for an intermediary to
handle the relatively small orders required
by retailers.
